Ouke no Monshou: Main Characters

CAROL: The leading lady. Beautiful in a doll-like, fragile way, she has blond hair and blue eyes. Those features are what first attracted the pharaoh to her. A lover of Egyptian history, she is extremely intelligent and knowledgeable. However, she can be daft and naïve when it comes to character judgment. Innocent, kind, and angelic, she’s not good at detecting a person’s hidden intentions. At times, she comes off as too trusting. This usually gets her in a multitude of trouble. Physically, Carol is very weak. She will never win in a wrestling match, I’ll tell you that. She’s also very child-like, a trait which Memphis finds absolutely adorable. All in all, you might fault her with being a weak damsel. Believe me though, her mind is strong. She’s also very stubborn, making her man go through hell in order to win her over, unintentionally of course. She's a cute character. Learn more about her when you read the manga (MangaFox is a great online place to start).

MEMPHIS: The leading man. Oh my, what a character. Specifically, what a personality! My initial opinion of him was bastard, albeit a very very HOT bastard. Look at the pictures and decide for yourself. The author uses a feminine, yet masculine, style to draw him. He has long eyebrows, thick-lashed eyes with kohl to emphasize them, and a well-sculpted mouth. His hair is midnight black and arrow straight, going right past his shoulders. Usually, he wears a gold head-dress/band which clashes beautifully with his hair. At times, he wears gold armor, anklets, and arm bracelets, giving himself a bright glow that stuns the eyes (like the sun). All in all, he dazzles the eyes, which explains why numerous girls go gaga over him (his sister being amongst the top). Charming and arrogant, he was never in want of anything, let alone women. However, given his vast ego, he finds the female race boring and inferior. Marriage, to him, has no significant meaning aside from political gain. Although many admire and are loyal to him, Memphis is known for his cruelty. He is known for mercilessly whipping servants over tiny blunders. Whatever the situation, he doesn’t mind drawing blood. Although not specified, various scenes imply that he likes to be brutal. It could also be that, as a pharaoh, he has no restrictions. In ancient Egypt, the pharaoh has divine and absolute power. His attitude changes (for better, and for worse) when he meets Carol. He forms an almost immediate attachment to her. That attachment comes with frustration over her seeming apathy and disgust towards him. There was a time when he forced her to consume wine in a celebration. She choked and keeled over. He steals a kiss and she slaps him in rage. Hitting a pharaoh is punishable by death. However, he spares her and does nothing. If anything, he watches over her even more tightly, fearing that she’ll run away. He loves to hug her, tease her, and boss her around. When she defies him, he flies into a rage. However, he tries not to hurt her. As his feelings expand and grow, so does his wariness over her fragility. She, in some respects, does tame him. Despite being a man through and through, he also exhibits child-like tendencies around her. When she says sweet words to him, he blushes (so cute). Jealously comes VERY easily for him as well. He doesn’t like it when she talks with a guy for too long. He especially loathes the brother and friend that she constantly talks about 3000 years into the future. Her brother is a subject of numerous fights between the couple. All in all, don’t let this character get away! Grab a manga, and enjoy. Find an online manga site near you!

Classic Manga: Daughter of the Nile

OUKE NO MONSHOU - DAUGHTER OF THE NILE:

Beautiful, just beautiful! This manga is so amazing, you have no idea. Hugely popular in the Asian countries, it came out first in 1976, and just finished a few years ago (I think). I know what you’re thinking, old and out-dated. But, believe me, some works are just timeless. The drawings are old, but I think the style is gorgeous. I don’t see how anyone would disagree. The artwork is part of the manga’s attraction. Though I must warn you, the first volume has terrible art. I remember when I turned to the first page, my initial reaction was “yuck”. The drawings were blurry and washed out. The art looked chewed up and just plain awful. HOWEVER, once you get past the first book, you’ll be fine. The drawings get better and better. I love how the characters are drawn, from the eyebrows to the hands and hair. Plot-wise, the manga revolves around Egypt. An American student named Carol visits the excavation of an unknown pharaoh’s tomb. She is a history lover, especially when it involves ancient Egypt. By accident, her father breaks a seal, releasing a curse in the form of an Egyptian princess. Her name is Asisu, and she seeks revenge on those who disturbed her brother’s resting place (by the way, this broad’s crazy. She’s also disturbingly obsessed with her brother, Memphis). First, she pretends to befriend Carol’s family. Later, she kills the girl’s father through a poisoned cobra bite. She tries to kill Carol, but fails, so she brings her back 3000 years in time to be a slave. By accident, Carol meets up with Memphis, who just ascended the throne at the time. He falls madly (oh I mean madly) in love with her, and forces her to stay in the palace with him. Carol’s vast knowledge of ancient Egypt earns her the respect of those around her. People begin to worship her as the daughter of the Nile goddess, hence, Daughter of the Nile. The rest of the story revolves around Carol dealing with love, jealousy, and political conflicts. Initially, she found Memphis’s ridiculous obsession with her perturbing. Later however, she begins to accept and return his affections (you’ll have to be patient though, hee hee). The outfits, style, and landscapes are just gorgeous. Do yourself a favor and check this wonderful manga out. It can be found on MangaFox. Believe me, you won’t be disappointed!

Read Manga Online: Gakuen Alice

GAKUEN ALICE MANGA: Another top romance manga! The romance is especially developed well. One catch, and I mean one, is that the characters are 10 year-old kids. But hey, this does not affect the profound meaning of the manga. Gakuen Alice is quite mature. Not in the profanity sense, but rather the spiritual sense. It gets to you. The manga is exceptional at bringing out emotion. As you read, you connect with each and every one of the characters. You care for them, and you want them to succeed in their goals. The plot is about a 10 year-old girl named Mikan Sakura. Her best friend Hotaru leaves to attend a special academy for the gifted. Dismayed, Mikan runs away from home to join her friend. When she arrives, she finds that the genius school is actually a place for kids with special abilities. Their abilities/powers are called alices, hence Gakuen Alice. The term ‘Gakuen’ means academy in Japanese. So, the English name is Alice Academy. Sure, some of you might think ‘X-Men ripoff’, but believe me, this manga is original in its own way. Many of the alices in the story are creative and fun to read about. Best of all, the plot is woven very well. There are numerous twists and turning points throughout the books. Mikan learns about her own alice (not a spoiler) along with befriending her classmates and earning admirers (oo la laaa). Now on to the romantic relationships: the main guy is a super cool genius named Natsume Hyuuga. I must say, for a kid, he ranks up there with the top manga bishies! He was actually labeled as one of the top ten manga hotties in an official Japan Poll. What makes him so appealing is his maturity. You’ll see it as you read along. He was at first mean and offensive towards Mikan, seeing that she’s an outsider. Later, though, he develops feelings for her which grow into a deep love. Mikan, on the other hand, is premature at her age. She’s dense when it comes to love. To her, Hotaru is the most important person. At her stage, she values friendship the most. She loves all her friends, including Natsume later on. However, she still has a lot to learn regarding the boy-girl factor. Don’t get dismayed, though, this makes everything fun! She has no qualms in hugging her favorite male teachers, or her favorite male upper classmates. Natsume gets, cough cough, rather jealous. I’ll leave the enjoyment to you guys. All I can say is, Gakuen Alice is another gem!

Shoujo Manga Skip Beat: Mangafox has it all!

The first romance manga I would recommend is…drumroll…SKIP BEAT! If you’re a shoujo manga fan, worship now. You should live and breathe this manga. It’s got everything: hot young male, strong female, lots of comedy, fantastic art, and superb romance. The story sets off with a 16 year-old girl named Kyoko Mogami. She gets shamelessly used (not sexually) and dumped by the man of her dreams, rock-star Sho Fuwa. The real kicker is her reaction. Instead of slumping and weeping, she fights back for revenge. No longer is she sweet and quiet. Here, we have a cute, sassy she-devil who puts ‘don’t get mad get even’ on a whole new level! The main story focuses on her rise to stardom as an aspiring actress at LME productions. She meets superstar Ren Tsuruga, the #1 actor in the entertainment world. After an interesting, need I say rough start, they become friends. It later becomes more on his side. She, on the other hand, is too dense to notice. The manga focuses on conflicts regarding her career, her friends, and her relationships with both Ren and Sho. Yes, a triangle will form way later in the story. Characterization is a strong part in this manga. I love how there’s no black and white. No one is a definite villain. Even Sho reveals his true colors later, and I mean that in a positive way. There are touching moments throughout the books, as bonds are formed and tables are turned. Relationship-wise, Kyoko’s biggest problem is her inability to open herself and love again. Not a big surprise, considering the way she was hurt. Ren’s conflict comes with ‘cracking her open’. He’s trying to find a way inside her heart, all the time fearing that she’ll go back to Shou. Kyoko’s ‘special feelings' for Shou is a constant sore point for him. I don’t want to get into too many details. I’ll leave the rest for you guys. Just believe me, Skip Beat is phenomenal. The acting part is also a strong draw point for the manga. But, being a blog for ‘good romance manga’, I’m, of course, focusing on the LOVE, lol. All and all, if you haven’t read this yet, start lining up! It’s amongst the best romance manga out there!

The 411 On Romantic Manga

We all like the average romance manga. But, we all love THE amazing romance manga. I’m Liz, and I’ve had my share of some crappy, fair, and good asian manga. Amongst the load, there are quite a few I’d like to highlight on. Some are very well known. Others are less known. For girls looking for a lovely manga to chomp on, this is your lucky day. For guys, I’m sure quite a few out there also enjoy some lovey-dovey once in a while, lol. To me, the best romance equates to the best chemistry. The story, of course, is important. But, what makes a romance great are the characters, especially the main guy. We never get tired of the big shot male lead who’s always on top of the game. He gets all the girls except the main girl. He holds all the cards, and he controls everyone but the heroine. For yaoi/yuri lovers, I’m currently sticking to heterosexual romance, so my posts are all guy-girl, girl-guy; never guy-guy or girl-girl. Sorry for now. Back to the main point, most of my mangas will center around the strong, dominate guy. HOWEVER, this does not mean the girl will not shine. I prefer mangas with strong girls as well as strong guys. I’m blabbing, so I’ll stop now. See you later, and I hope my future blogs will help/entertain those in search of quality romance mangas.
